Qualified as a doctor in 1963 and spent 5 years working in the Solomon Islands where he developed an interest in ethnic art and the problems of remote island communities. Until 1999 he worked as a single handed GP in Shetland. After retirement he pursued dormant aspirations to create artworks, beachcomb and spend time in small boats and sea kayaks.
